Derek has been designing and working with ecological systems in Davis, CA since 2004 He obtained his BS in Biological Systems Engineering at UC Davis in 2009 and worked for several years on innovative composting research for Yolo County. He returned to UC Davis later on to manage and operate the Biogas Energy Project, a state of the art facility for turning organic waste streams into fuel and soil amendments. Derek has worked on organic farms, managed extensive food producing gardens, converted lawns into food forests, managed a beekeeping company, and is a proficient woodworker. He became a certified permaculture designer in 2009 and studied under Penny Livingston, Geoff Lawton, Toby Hemenway, Erik Ohlsen, Jon Jeavons, and several other pioneers in the ecological design movement. In 2014-2015, he attended the first Ecological Landscaper Immersion, a first of its kind program in the US. Derek was honored by the City of Davis and 4 regional mayors with the first annual Cool Davis Eco-Hero of the Year Award for his efforts improving the ecological footprint of the City and Campus. He is the Lead Designer/Engineer and Project Manager for Whole System Designs.

John grew up in Davis, CA and has over 10 years of experience designing outdoor ecological environments for people. John integrates his knowledge of landscape design with his Permaculture studies and plant wisdom. This unique insight has proved valuable for both site-specific design work and for homeowners to have more of a relationship w their gardens. John’s passion started while working at at plant nursery during college and later worked with designer Mike Corbett for many years. He later on participated in an apprenticeship program by leading ecological landscape designer Erik Ohlsen in Sonoma County followed by the Ecological Landscape Immersion program, where he and Derek decided to merge skills and establish a business partnership.
